I'd like to see us organize the whole thing from starting as a newbie ... as much for my own education as the newbies.

However it is unfair to ask people to give away what has taken them years to learn without some sort of reward so I would its fair to ask those that feel they benefit from a post to visit any sponsor link that poster may provide (posters please add the 2nd teir sponsor link in the main body of your post(s) and keep it to one (or two if applicable) per post

and one of these days if I ever get off my butt ... I'll get a sponsor page up for the forum because we'd like your support too

I would suggest the starting point be that you research the area you want to focus your website and decide on a domain name.

There are many approaches to a domain name and my suggestion or current line of thought is to get a domain that's both keyword rich and yet somewhat memorable.

then there's the question of using the "-" ... as I think its a given this is not going to work against you in serps .. probably work to advantage in fact ... but the downside is that its asking a lot of surfers to not only remember your domain is www.best-rival-casino.com but also to go as far as to be sure to include it when they're speaking to others. The latter not likely I would suspect.

My final thinking on the dash is that you can probably get away with one dash and still brand efficiently but start going past that and it is much thinner ice.

I think that domain names will always effect SEO as it makes perfect sense that redwagon.com come up in search for red wagons ... at least until a spidered search revealed there was no info about red wagons.

so if you're going to do anything with SEO then relevant keywords in your domain can only help.

Step one, - Keyword research. I would not use words such as best. I think / 99% sure google penalizes these words. Why ? Well everyone is the best/ or greatest. or awesome. They prefer brands 100%, therefore try and skip those.

Back to KW research, If ok to post links, I will add the ones i like, but "keyword suggestions" , "keyword tool" searches will turn up a lot for free.

Steve, I have some great ebooks i can give to you to host, not sure of your space on the server, They on my site now but don't want you to think i am trying to spam my site

I wish i could contribute to this thread, but i am embarrassed to even try. You all know so much more than i do about these confusing things, i think i am going to be your first newbie on these subjects.

I just read an article the other day about dash vs. underscore in the domain name. its rather old but from Matt Cuffs.

Thanks Jim,

Just got to this post and i know nothing about how "dashes.etc..work" so this will be valuable to me and others i believe.

Now for keywords, when picking your keywords say for "gambling forums" if i choose to use those exact words, millions of them pop up in the search, how could i make mine stand out, by using some different types of keywords that would still reach the search looking for a good gambling forum? there are not many ideas in my head that describe a "forum" other than "forum"??

Hey Pat,

Another word for what you have here is community.....so you may want to look at gambling community...affiliate community....webmaster community.

Just some thoughts.

Actually Pat I'm as newbie as you are when it comes to this .... which is why I wanted to do the thread

okay to summarize far

1. keyword research
2. choose domain name

that makes perfect sense because you'd like to know your keyword before choosing a domain especially if you're using the dash method which is imho an obvious effort to spam your domain name with keywords

so what would #3 be? writing your content?

other candidates for the list at this point might be ...

choosing your sponsors (by now you know you're keywords your targeting so it would be a good idea to have something to sell that is of same subject matter ... ie bingo for bingo content ... casino for casino etc

that's it for now. GF just totally wacked my line of thinking ..sigh.

I have rival hero because I want to have a site that visitors can remember. It sure takes a lot af more effort to get this on going. But it is an idea and I want to see how it will develop over time.
